font
A style of letters and symbols used in writing or printing.
A font is a complete set of letters, numbers, and symbols all designed in the same style. When you type on a computer, you're choosing a font: Times New Roman looks formal and traditional, Comic Sans looks playful and casual, and Courier looks like it came from an old typewriter. Each font has its own personality and feel.
Before computers, printers kept metal letters organized in cases, with each complete set of one style called a font. They would arrange these metal letters to print books and newspapers, then clean them and use them again.
Today, choosing the right font matters more than you might think. A birthday party invitation in a fun, bouncy font feels very different from the same invitation in a serious, plain font. Teachers often ask students to use readable fonts like Arial or Times New Roman for essays because fancy, decorative fonts can be hard to read. Graphic designers spend years studying how fonts affect the way people feel about everything from cereal boxes to road signs. The font you choose sends a message before anyone reads a single word.
