foolishness
Silly or unwise behavior that shows you’re not thinking carefully.
Foolishness is silly or unwise behavior that shows poor judgment. When someone acts with foolishness, they're doing something that doesn't make sense or that might cause problems they could have easily avoided. If you spent your entire allowance on candy the first day you got it, only to realize you needed money for the book fair later that week, that would be foolishness.
Foolishness isn't the same as making an honest mistake or not knowing something. It's when you should know better but act carelessly anyway. Riding your bike down a steep hill with no brakes, ignoring your teacher's clear instructions and then being surprised you did the assignment wrong, or teasing a dog you don't know: these all show foolishness.
The word suggests that someone isn't thinking through the consequences of their actions. A moment of foolishness might mean talking back to your parents right before asking them for a favor, or staying up all night before a big test. Sometimes foolishness is harmless and just makes people laugh, like wearing your shirt backwards on purpose as a joke. But serious foolishness can lead to real trouble.
The opposite of foolishness is wisdom: thinking carefully, learning from experience, and making smart choices even when nobody's watching.
