foothold
A secure starting position that helps you move forward.
A foothold is a secure position from which you can make further progress. The word originally described a small ledge or crack where a rock climber could safely place their foot while climbing. That tiny spot might seem insignificant, but it's crucial: it lets the climber rest, regroup, and reach for the next handhold above.
The word now applies to any situation where you've established a starting position that opens up new possibilities. When a new student makes their first friend at school, they've gained a foothold in the social world of their classroom. When a business opens its first store in a new city, it has gained a foothold in that market. When you finally understand a difficult concept in math, you've established a foothold that helps you tackle harder problems.
A foothold doesn't mean you've reached your goal. It means you've found solid ground in challenging territory. That first friend might lead to more friendships. That first store might grow into a chain. That math concept might unlock an entire field of study. The power of a foothold lies not in where you are, but in where you can go from there.
