footwork
The way someone moves and positions their feet while moving.
Footwork is the way someone moves and positions their feet, especially in sports, dancing, or fighting. A basketball player with excellent footwork can pivot smoothly to avoid a defender or position themselves perfectly for a shot. A boxer uses quick footwork to dodge punches and move around the ring. Dancers practice footwork to make their steps precise and graceful.
Good footwork often separates beginners from experts. Watch a skilled soccer player dribble past opponents: their feet move so quickly and precisely that the ball seems glued to them. A tennis player with poor footwork arrives at the ball off-balance and struggles to hit it cleanly, while someone with good footwork gets into position early and hits solid shots.
The term also appears in phrases like fancy footwork, which can mean impressive physical movement or, more broadly, clever maneuvering through a tricky situation. If a student uses fancy footwork to avoid getting in trouble, they've talked their way out of a problem cleverly (though not always fairly). Whether you're learning a new dance, playing a sport, or even just trying to walk across a crowded room without bumping into anyone, footwork matters more than most people realize.
