fore
A loud warning shout in golf to warn of a ball.
Fore is a warning shout used in golf to alert people that a ball is flying toward them. When a golfer hits an errant shot that might hit someone, they immediately yell “Fore!” as loudly as possible so people can protect themselves. The word works like “heads up!” or “watch out!” but specifically for golf balls.
You might also see fore- as a prefix meaning “in front” or “before,” as in forehead (the front of your head), forecast (telling what will happen before it occurs), or foreground (the front part of a picture or scene). A ship's front section is called the fore, opposite the back, or aft.
In old-fashioned English, people sometimes used fore as a poetic way to say “before,” as in “fore the sun did rise,” meaning before the sun rose.
