fraudster
A person who lies to steal money or property.
A fraudster is someone who deliberately tricks or deceives people to steal their money or property. While a simple thief might grab something and run, a fraudster uses lies, fake documents, or elaborate schemes to make victims willingly hand over what they want.
Fraudsters might create fake websites that look like real stores to collect credit card numbers, or pretend to be a bank calling on the phone to get someone's password. Some fraudsters sell products they know don't work, or convince people to invest in businesses that don't actually exist. Others forge signatures on checks or create fake identities to open bank accounts.
What makes someone a fraudster rather than just a liar is the criminal intent to steal through deception. A person who fibs about finishing their homework isn't a fraudster, but someone who creates a fake charity to pocket donated money is.
Fraudsters often target vulnerable people, like older adults who might not recognize a scam phone call, or excited investors who don't ask enough questions. Law enforcement works to catch fraudsters and protect the public, and people can also protect themselves by staying alert and questioning things that seem too good to be true.
