freeloader
A person who always takes from others but never helps.
A freeloader is someone who regularly takes advantage of others' generosity without giving anything back or doing their fair share.
When your class plans a pizza party and everyone agrees to bring something, the freeloader shows up empty-handed but eats plenty of pizza. When a group does a science project together, the freeloader skips the work sessions but happily puts their name on the finished poster. A freeloader might always forget their lunch money but never forget to ask friends to share their snacks.
What makes someone a freeloader isn't occasionally needing help. We all need assistance sometimes. It's the pattern of always taking and never giving, always finding excuses to avoid contributing. The freeloader treats others' kindness as something they're entitled to rather than something to appreciate and return when they can.
People quickly notice freeloaders and often stop inviting them or helping them. While someone might get away with freeloading for a while, they usually end up isolated because nobody enjoys feeling used. The opposite of a freeloader is someone who pulls their own weight, shares what they have, and makes sure friendships and group efforts feel balanced and fair.
