freestanding
Able to stand or exist on its own without support.
Freestanding means able to stand on its own without being attached to a wall or supported by anything else. A freestanding bookshelf doesn't need to be bolted to the wall: it balances on its own legs or base. A freestanding house sits separate from other buildings, unlike townhouses that share walls with their neighbors.
In furniture and architecture, freestanding items offer flexibility. You can move a freestanding lamp anywhere in a room, while a ceiling fixture stays put. A freestanding garage sits apart from the main house, and a freestanding swing set can be repositioned around the yard.
The word can also describe something independent in a broader sense. A freestanding sculpture in a museum sits on its own pedestal, meant to be viewed from all sides. A freestanding store operates independently rather than being part of a mall. When something is freestanding, it doesn't rely on other structures for support. It's self-sufficient and complete on its own.
