A small organ that stores bile to help digest fats.
The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ tucked beneath your liver that stores a digestive fluid called bile. Think of it as a storage tank for a greenish liquid your liver makes to help break down fats from food.
Here's how it works: Your liver constantly produces bile, and the gallbladder stores it until you eat something fatty, like pizza or ice cream. When that fatty food reaches your small intestine, your gallbladder squeezes itself like a little water balloon, squirting bile through a tube into your intestine to help digest the fats.
Some people develop hard, pebble-like deposits in their gallbladder called gallstones, which can cause pain and require medical attention. Interestingly, humans can live without their gallbladder if it needs to be removed. The bile still gets made by the liver, it just drips directly into the intestine instead of being stored first. People without gallbladders can eat normally, though they sometimes need to be a bit more careful with very fatty meals.
The gallbladder is one of those organs that works quietly in the background, doing its job without you ever noticing it unless something goes wrong.
