galosh
A waterproof shoe cover worn to keep regular shoes dry.
A galosh is a waterproof overshoe, usually made of rubber, that you wear over your regular shoes to protect them from rain, snow, and mud. Think of galoshes like raincoats for your feet: they slip on over your everyday shoes and keep them dry when you need to walk through puddles or slush.
Before modern waterproof boots became common, galoshes were essential gear for anyone heading out in wet weather. You'd put on your nice leather school shoes or dress shoes at home, then pull galoshes over them before stepping outside. Once you arrived at your destination, you'd remove the galoshes and continue wearing your now-dry regular shoes.
Today, most people just wear waterproof boots instead, but galoshes are still useful when you want to protect nice shoes without changing them. Some types fold up small enough to tuck in a backpack, making them perfect for unexpected rainstorms.
