gander
A quick or casual look at something.
When you take a gander at something, you look at it, often quickly or casually. The phrase “take a gander” means to have a look or glance at something. A teacher might say, “Take a gander at this problem on the board,” or you might ask a friend, “Can I take a gander at your drawing?”
The word comes from the idea of stretching your neck to see something, like a goose (a male goose is called a gander) stretching its long neck to look around. The expression has a friendly, informal feeling to it, more casual than “examine” or “inspect.” You wouldn't use it in formal writing, but it's perfect for everyday conversation.
