gangplank
A movable ramp that lets people walk between ship and dock.
A gangplank is a movable bridge or ramp that connects a ship to the dock, allowing people to walk on and off the vessel safely. Picture a wide wooden plank with raised edges or railings that crew members slide into place when a ship arrives at port. Without a gangplank, passengers would have to leap across the gap between ship and shore, which would be dangerous, especially as the ship rocks with the waves.
Today you'll still see gangplanks on cruise ships, ferries, and boats at marinas. Modern versions are often made of metal with non-slip surfaces, and they can be raised or lowered to adjust for tides. Some are quite fancy, with railings and even roofs, while others on small boats might be just a simple board.
