A gantry is a tall, bridge-like structure built to support or hold something heavy. Picture a giant metal frame standing over a space shuttle on its launch pad: that massive steel framework keeping the rocket upright and providing access for engineers is a gantry.

You'll see gantries in many places where heavy objects need support. Shipping ports use enormous gantries to lift containers off cargo ships. Train yards use gantries to hold signals high above the tracks. Some highway signs hang from gantries that span multiple lanes. Construction sites use gantry cranes that roll along tracks while lifting steel beams into place.

The key feature of a gantry is its shape: it typically has vertical supports on either side with a horizontal beam connecting them across the top, forming a tall archway or bridge. This design lets the gantry hold tremendous weight while leaving space underneath for people, vehicles, or equipment to move freely. When engineers need to support something massive while keeping the ground clear below, they turn to a gantry.
