garage
A building where people park or fix their cars.
A garage is a building or part of a building where people keep their cars, trucks, or other vehicles. Most houses with garages have them attached to one side, with a large door that rolls up so cars can drive in and out. Some garages are separate buildings standing in the backyard or by the driveway.
Before cars became common in the early 1900s, people kept horses and carriages in similar buildings called carriage houses or stables. When automobiles arrived, people needed a dry, protected place to park them, and the garage became a standard part of American homes.
Many garages serve double duty: they store cars but also become workshops, storage areas for sports equipment and tools, or even band practice spaces. Some famous American companies, like Apple and Disney, famously started in someone's garage. When people say a band has a garage rock sound, they mean it sounds raw and unpolished, like a group practicing in an actual garage rather than a professional studio.
You can also take your car to an auto repair garage (or just “a garage”) where mechanics fix engines, change oil, and repair damage. This kind of garage is a business, not just a parking space.
