gatehouse
A small building by an entrance where guards watch visitors.
A gatehouse is a small building located at or near the entrance to a larger property, like an estate, castle, or gated community. Think of it as a guard station or checkpoint where people control who comes and goes. In medieval castles, the gatehouse was a fortified structure with thick walls, heavy doors, and sometimes a portcullis (a heavy metal grating that could be lowered to block the entrance). Guards stationed there would challenge approaching visitors and decide whether to grant them entry.
Modern gatehouses serve similar purposes but are usually less dramatic. A security guard in a gatehouse at a private community might check identification and record visitors' names. Some apartment complexes or office parks have gatehouses where attendants help direct guests to the right building. Historic gatehouses, like those at old universities or estates, often remain as charming architectural features, even when they no longer serve their original purpose.
