generator
A machine that turns motion into electricity.
A generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy (movement) into electrical energy. When you turn a crank, pedal a bicycle, or spin a turbine, a generator can transform that motion into electricity that powers lights, computers, or other devices.
Think of it like this: pushing a playground merry-go-round takes your muscle power and turns it into spinning motion. A generator does something similar but turns that spinning motion into electricity. Inside, magnets and coils of wire work together so that when something spins the generator's shaft, electricity flows out through wires.
Generators are everywhere. Power plants use enormous generators spun by steam, falling water, or wind to create the electricity that flows to your home. Portable generators, often powered by gasoline engines, provide backup electricity during power outages or at construction sites. Even a bicycle headlight might use a tiny generator that produces electricity as your wheel spins.
The word can also describe a person or thing that produces or creates something. A great teacher might be called a generator of ideas, someone whose creativity inspires students to think in new ways. In this sense, generator simply means something that generates, or brings into existence, whatever follows.
