genre
A type or category of art, books, movies, or music.
A genre is a category or type of creative work that shares similar features, styles, or subjects. Books, movies, music, and art all get sorted into genres to help people find what they enjoy.
In literature, common genres include mystery (stories with puzzles to solve), science fiction (tales set in the future or featuring advanced technology), fantasy (adventures in imaginary worlds with magic), and realistic fiction (stories that could actually happen). A book like Charlotte's Web belongs to the animal fiction genre, while The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is fantasy.
Movies work the same way. Comedies make you laugh, horror films try to scare you, and action movies feature chases and explosions. Many stories fit into multiple genres: a movie might be both science fiction and adventure.
Music has genres too. Rock, jazz, classical, country, and hip-hop are all musical genres with distinct sounds, instruments, and styles.
Understanding genre helps you know what to expect. When you pick up a mystery novel, you know there will be clues to follow and a puzzle to solve. When you choose a comedy at the movie theater, you're expecting something funny. Writers and artists often play with genre conventions, mixing elements from different genres or surprising audiences who think they know what's coming. Sometimes the most creative works bend or break the rules of their genre entirely.
