gentleman
A man who is polite, kind, and respectful to others.
A gentleman is a man who treats others with courtesy, respect, and kindness, especially in situations where it would be easy to act otherwise.
A gentleman might hold the door for someone carrying heavy bags. He speaks politely even when frustrated. He keeps his promises and shows up when he says he will. When playing sports, a gentleman follows the rules and congratulates opponents after the game, whether he wins or loses. He stands up for others who are being treated unfairly and admits his own mistakes rather than blaming someone else.
The word doesn't mean being weak or passive. A gentleman can be competitive, strong-willed, and ambitious. What sets him apart is how he treats people: with honesty, fairness, and consideration. He doesn't brag about his accomplishments or put others down to make himself look better.
You might hear someone say “that wasn't very gentlemanly” when a boy acts rudely or takes advantage of someone. The opposite is being called a gentleman, which is a compliment about your character. It means people trust you, respect you, and believe you will try to do the right thing even when no one's watching.
