geologist
A scientist who studies Earth’s rocks and how it changes.
A geologist is a scientist who studies the Earth: its rocks, minerals, and the powerful forces that shape our planet. Geologists investigate how mountains form, why volcanoes erupt, where to find oil and precious metals, and how landscapes change over millions of years.
When you see layers of different colored rock in a cliff face, a geologist can read those layers like pages in a history book, understanding what happened hundreds of millions of years ago. Some geologists hunt for dinosaur fossils. Others predict earthquakes or help construction crews determine if the ground is safe for building. Still others explore caves, study glaciers, or search for underground water sources.
Geologists use hammers to chip rock samples, examine crystals under microscopes, and sometimes venture into dangerous places, like active volcanoes, to collect data. Their work helps us find resources we need, understand natural disasters, and learn the incredible story of how our 4.5-billion-year-old planet formed and continues to change.
