get-together
An informal meeting where people hang out and talk.
A get-together is an informal gathering where people meet to spend time with each other, usually just for fun or to catch up. When your family has a get-together, relatives might come over for dinner, conversation, and maybe some games. When friends plan a get-together, they're arranging to hang out without any big formality or special occasion required.
Get-togethers are relaxed and casual. A birthday party with decorations, invitations, and a planned schedule is more formal than a get-together. But when neighbors decide to meet at the park on Saturday afternoon, or when your parents invite old college friends over for pizza, that's a get-together. The emphasis is on the company, not on elaborate planning or entertainment.
The word suggests something warmer and more intentional than just bumping into someone. You wouldn't call accidentally meeting your friend at the library a get-together, but if you both planned to meet there to study and talk, you might call it one. Get-togethers create space for conversation, laughter, and strengthening relationships without the pressure of a big event.
