gifted

Having a special natural talent or ability in something.

Gifted describes someone who has exceptional natural ability in a particular area, especially intellectual or creative talents that develop earlier or more strongly than is typical for their age. A gifted student might grasp complex math concepts years ahead of their classmates, or a gifted young musician might play pieces that usually take much longer to master.

Schools often use the word formally to identify students who need more challenging work than the standard curriculum provides. A gifted program might offer advanced science projects, accelerated reading, or opportunities to explore subjects in greater depth. But giftedness isn't limited to academics: someone can be gifted at chess, drawing, problem-solving, or understanding how machines work.

Being gifted doesn't mean everything comes easily, though. A student gifted in math might still struggle with writing. A gifted artist might find sports frustrating. The word describes unusual strength in specific areas, not overall perfection.

The word can also describe talented adults: a gifted surgeon, a gifted teacher, a gifted engineer. In this sense, it often acknowledges both natural talent and the years of hard work someone invested to develop that talent fully.

Sometimes people confusegiftedwith simply being a hard worker or getting good grades. But the word specifically points to that special spark of natural ability, that ease with certain kinds of thinking or creating that makes someone stand out in a particular field.
