gist
The main idea or most important part of something.
Gist is the main point or essential meaning of something. When your friend tells a long, wandering story about their weekend and you ask “What's the gist?”, you're asking them to skip the details and tell you what really matters. When you read a complicated article about climate science, understanding the gist means grasping the central idea, even if you don't follow every technical detail.
If your teacher asks you to explain the gist of a chapter you just read, she wants you to capture the main idea in a few sentences, not retell every event. When someone says “I get the gist,” they mean they understand enough to follow along, even if they missed some specifics.
You might tell a friend, “The gist of it is that we're meeting at noon,” after explaining a complicated plan with multiple options. The gist strips away confusion and uncertainty to reveal what actually needs to happen. Learning to identify the gist of what you read, hear, or experience is a valuable skill. It helps you focus on what truly matters instead of getting lost in endless details.
