goalkeeper
A player who guards the goal to stop scores.
A goalkeeper is the player on a soccer, hockey, or similar team whose job is to defend the goal and prevent the opposing team from scoring. While other players roam the field trying to move the ball or puck forward, the goalkeeper stays near the goal, positioned as the last line of defense.
In soccer, the goalkeeper is the only player allowed to use their hands, but only within a marked area called the penalty box. They dive, leap, and stretch to block shots, sometimes making spectacular saves that keep their team in the game. A skilled goalkeeper needs quick reflexes, good judgment about when to charge forward or stay back, and the mental toughness to bounce back after allowing a goal.
The position requires a unique combination of courage and caution. Goalkeepers must be brave enough to dive at an opponent's feet or leap into a crowd of players, yet patient enough to wait for exactly the right moment to act. In hockey, goalkeepers (often called goalies) wear heavy protective padding and face shots flying at tremendous speeds.
A great goalkeeper can transform an entire game. Even when their team is being outplayed, a goalkeeper making save after save can keep the score close and give their teammates a chance to win.
