goatherd
A person whose job is to take care of goats.
A goatherd is a person whose job is to watch over and care for a group of goats, called a herd. Throughout history, goatherds have guided their animals to good grazing land, protected them from predators, and made sure none wandered off and got lost.
Goatherding is one of humanity's oldest professions, stretching back thousands of years. In mountainous regions like the Alps or the Himalayas, goatherds still lead their animals up steep slopes where goats can find food that other livestock can't reach. Goats are excellent climbers and can thrive in rocky, harsh terrain where cattle or sheep would struggle.
The work requires patience and alertness. A skilled goatherd learns each animal's personality and notices immediately if one is sick or in danger. In many traditional societies, young people started as goatherds, learning responsibility while spending long days outdoors with the animals.
You might encounter goatherds in stories set in ancient times or rural villages. The beloved children's book Heidi features Peter the goatherd, who takes his herd up the Swiss mountains each day. While fewer people work as goatherds in modern times, they still exist in parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East where goats remain an important source of milk, cheese, and meat.
