gobsmacked
Extremely shocked or surprised so much you cannot speak.
To be gobsmacked means to be so shocked or surprised that you're left speechless, as if someone had smacked you in the gob (British slang for mouth). When you're gobsmacked, you're so astonished that your mouth literally hangs open and you can't find words.
You might be gobsmacked when you walk into a surprise birthday party you never suspected, or when you discover your quiet classmate has won a national science competition. A teacher might be gobsmacked when a student who struggled all year suddenly aces the final exam. The word captures that moment when surprise hits you so hard that all you can do is stand there with your jaw dropped.
You can almost see someone standing there, mouth agape, too stunned to speak. It's stronger than just being surprised. Being gobsmacked means you've been knocked off balance by something completely unexpected, whether it's wonderful news, shocking information, or an unbelievable turn of events. When something leaves you absolutely gobsmacked, you're experiencing one of those rare moments when reality exceeds anything you could have imagined.
