goddaughter
A girl who has a special guiding adult called a godparent.
A goddaughter is a girl for whom someone has made a special promise to help guide and support throughout her life. This relationship comes from a Christian tradition where, at a child's baptism, adults called godparents pledge to help raise the child in their faith and be there for them as they grow up.
When you become someone's godparent, you're taking on a meaningful role in that child's life. You might help teach them important values, remember their birthday every year, give advice when they need it, or just be another caring adult they can count on. The relationship works both ways: the godparent feels a special responsibility for their goddaughter, and the goddaughter knows she has another person in her corner.
Today, many families use godparents even outside religious contexts, simply as a way to formally connect a child with important adults in their lives. A parent might ask their closest friend or a beloved sibling to be their daughter's godmother or godfather. It's a way of saying, “You matter so much to us that we want you to be part of our daughter's life in a special way.” The male equivalent is godson, and the female equivalent is godmother.
