godfather
A man chosen to guide a child’s religious and moral life.
A godfather is a man who plays a special role at someone's baptism, a religious ceremony in Christian traditions. When parents have their baby baptized, they choose godparents (a godfather and often a godmother too) to help guide the child's spiritual and moral education as they grow up. Traditionally, if something happened to the parents, the godparents would help care for the child.
In many families, being asked to be a godfather is considered a great honor, showing deep trust and friendship. Some people take the role very seriously, staying involved in their godchild's life through the years, while others treat it more as a ceremonial title.
The word has also taken on other meanings. In organized crime, a godfather is the powerful leader of a criminal family or organization. People sometimes use the term more loosely to describe the founder or most important figure in any field, like calling someone “the godfather of hip-hop” or “the godfather of modern physics.” In these cases, it suggests someone who created or shaped something important that others built on.
