godmother
A special adult chosen to guide and support a child.
A godmother is a woman who plays a special role in someone's life, traditionally taking on responsibilities during a religious ceremony like baptism or christening. When parents choose a godmother for their child, they're selecting someone they trust to help guide and support that child as they grow up. The godmother might offer advice during tough times, remember birthdays and special occasions, or simply be an extra caring adult the child can turn to.
In many families, a godmother becomes like an honorary aunt, even if she's not actually related by blood. She might teach her godchild special skills, share family stories, or provide a different perspective from the parents. Some godmothers take their role very seriously and stay involved throughout their godchild's entire life.
The term also appears in fairy tales, where a fairy godmother uses magic to help the hero or heroine. In Cinderella, the fairy godmother transforms Cinderella's rags into a beautiful gown and creates a carriage from a pumpkin. These magical godmothers represent the protective, generous spirit of the real relationship: someone who appears when you need help and wants to see you succeed.
The male version is godfather, and together they're called godparents. While the role began as a religious tradition, many families today choose godparents simply because they want certain people to have a special connection with their child.
