goldendoodle
A friendly pet dog that is part golden retriever, part poodle.
A goldendoodle is a dog bred by crossing a golden retriever with a poodle. These dogs became popular starting in the 1990s because breeders hoped to combine the friendly, gentle personality of golden retrievers with the low-shedding coat of poodles.
Goldendoodles come in different sizes depending on whether they're bred with standard, miniature, or toy poodles. Their coats can be wavy or curly, and they often shed less than purebred golden retrievers, which appeals to families who want a dog but struggle with allergies.
The name follows the pattern of other “designer dogs” like labradoodles (Labrador retriever plus poodle) or cockapoos (cocker spaniel plus poodle). While some people love goldendoodles for being affectionate, energetic, and playful, they're not recognized as an official breed by major kennel clubs. Each goldendoodle can have different traits depending on which parent breed they take after more.
These dogs need regular grooming to prevent their coats from matting, and they typically require plenty of exercise and attention. Like their golden retriever ancestors, goldendoodles often love swimming, playing fetch, and being around people.
