goodbye
A word you say when leaving someone or a place.
Goodbye is what we say when parting from someone, whether for a few hours or much longer. When you leave school for the day, you tell your teacher goodbye. When your grandparents visit and then drive home, everyone says goodbye at the door.
People say goodbye in many ways depending on the situation. A quick bye works for everyday moments, while a longer, more emotional goodbye fits serious departures, like when a family member moves far away or when you're leaving a place you've loved. Some goodbyes feel easy and light, like waving to a friend after a playdate. Others feel harder, carrying the weight of real separation.
Notice that goodbye involves both words and actions. It's often accompanied by hugs, waves, or promises to see each other again soon. A good goodbye acknowledges that parting matters, even when you know you'll reconnect before long.
