goosebumps
Small bumps on your skin when you’re cold or emotional.
Goosebumps are those tiny bumps that suddenly appear on your skin when you're cold, scared, or feeling a strong emotion. They look like the bumpy skin of a plucked goose, with each little bump where a hair on your arm or leg stands straight up.
Your body creates goosebumps automatically, without you thinking about it. When you step out into cold air, goosebumps appear as your body tries to trap warm air near your skin. The same reaction happens during intense moments: watching a thrilling movie scene, hearing a beautiful song, or feeling genuinely frightened. Some people get goosebumps when they feel awe or inspiration, like watching an incredible performance or witnessing something amazing in nature.
This reaction comes from our distant ancestors who had much more body hair. When they got cold or faced danger, their hair would stand up to create insulation or make them look bigger and more threatening. We barely have enough body hair for that anymore, but our bodies still react the same way. Today, goosebumps are mostly just a reminder that something has triggered a powerful physical or emotional response, even if we don't need that extra warmth anymore.
