graft
Dishonest use of power to get money or benefits.
Graft has two completely different meanings:
- In gardening and medicine, graft means joining living tissue from one source onto another, like attaching a branch from one apple tree onto another tree's trunk, or transplanting skin to help heal a burn.
- Graft also means the dishonest use of a position of power to get money or benefits. When a city official accepts graft, they might take bribes to award contracts to certain companies, or they might steer government money toward their friends' businesses. A politician engaging in graft might demand payment in exchange for approving permits or changing laws to benefit someone willing to pay.
