grape
A small, juicy fruit that grows in bunches on vines.
A grape is a small, round fruit that grows in clusters on vines. Grapes can be green, red, purple, or almost black, and they have smooth, slightly waxy skin with sweet, juicy flesh inside. Most grapes contain a few small seeds, though seedless varieties have been cultivated for easy eating.
People have grown grapes for thousands of years, making them one of humanity's oldest cultivated crops. Fresh grapes make a refreshing snack, but they're also dried into raisins or pressed into juice. The ancient Romans and Greeks prized grapes so highly that they featured them in their art and mythology.
Grapevines grow best in warm, sunny climates with cool nights, which is why places like California, France, Italy, and Spain are famous for their vineyards (grape farms). A single grapevine can produce fruit for decades if properly cared for.
When someone says something is sour grapes, they mean a person is pretending not to want something only because they couldn't have it, like a kid claiming they didn't want to win the race after losing.
