A warm feeling of being truly thankful for something good.
Gratitude is the feeling of being thankful and appreciative for something good in your life. When your grandmother bakes your favorite cookies, when a friend helps you with a difficult assignment, when you wake up healthy on a beautiful morning, that warm feeling of appreciation is gratitude.
Gratitude goes deeper than just saying “thank you” out of politeness. It's a genuine recognition that something valuable has happened, whether through someone's kindness, your own good fortune, or simply the good things you already have. A person who feels gratitude for their teacher's patience doesn't just mouth the words at the end of class: they truly recognize and value the teacher's effort.
You can feel gratitude for big things, like having a safe home and a loving family, or small things, like finding a lucky penny or enjoying a perfect apple. Some people keep gratitude journals where they write down things they're thankful for each day, which helps them notice and appreciate good things they might otherwise overlook.
When you express gratitude, you acknowledge that something pleasing or valuable has come into your life. People who regularly feel and express gratitude often find they feel happier and more connected to others, because they're paying attention to life's gifts rather than only its problems.
