grayish
Somewhat gray in color, but mixed with other colors.
Grayish means having a color that is somewhat gray or tinged with gray, but not purely gray. A grayish sky might have hints of blue or white mixed in. A grayish rock might be mostly gray with streaks of brown or tan.
The suffix -ish is useful because it means “somewhat” or “kind of like.” You can add it to many color words: bluish, greenish, reddish. When you're not sure exactly what color something is, or when it's a mix of colors with gray as one of them, grayish is a perfect word.
You might notice grayish clouds rolling in before a storm, or observe that your white T-shirt has turned grayish after many washings. An artist mixing paints might create a grayish purple by adding white and black to red and blue. The word helps us describe colors precisely when “gray” alone isn't quite right, but gray is definitely part of what we're seeing.
