greediness
The selfish habit of wanting far more than you need.
Greediness is the quality of wanting much more than you need, especially when it means taking from others or ignoring what's fair. A greedy person at a pizza party might pile five slices on their plate before everyone else gets one. Someone showing greediness in a game might hoard all the best cards or resources instead of sharing or trading.
Greediness goes beyond simply wanting things. Everyone wants things, but greediness means letting that wanting control your choices in selfish ways. The greedy character in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Veruca Salt, doesn't just want a golden goose: she demands it immediately without caring about anyone else. A greedy business owner might shortchange workers to keep more profit, or a greedy ruler might tax people heavily to fill royal treasuries while citizens struggle.
The word often appears in stories as a warning. King Midas's greediness for gold left him unable to eat or hug his daughter. Pirates in adventure tales lose everything chasing one more treasure. These stories suggest that greediness doesn't just hurt others: it traps the greedy person too, making them unable to enjoy what they already have.
You might hear people talk about corporate greediness or the greediness of certain leaders, but greediness shows up in small ways too, like cutting in line, taking the biggest cookie every time, or refusing to let others have a turn with something fun.
