greyhound
A tall, very fast dog breed with a slim body.
A greyhound is a breed of dog built for incredible speed. With their long legs, deep chests, and lean, muscular bodies, greyhounds can sprint faster than any other dog, reaching speeds over 40 miles per hour. That's as fast as a car driving through your neighborhood!
For thousands of years, people have bred greyhounds specifically for coursing, which means chasing prey by sight rather than scent. Ancient Egyptians treasured them, and you can see greyhounds depicted in Egyptian art from 4,000 years ago. In medieval Europe, only nobles were allowed to own them. Today, greyhounds compete in racing, though many people now keep them as gentle, affectionate pets.
Despite their reputation as racing dogs, greyhounds are surprisingly calm and lazy at home. After a quick sprint, they're happy to lounge around for hours, earning them the nickname “40-mph couch potato.” Their quiet, patient nature makes them excellent companions.
The word Greyhound is also the name of a bus company whose logo features a running greyhound, chosen to suggest speed and reliability for cross-country travel.
