group
A collection of people or things that belong together.
A group is a collection of people or things that are together in some way. You might work in a group on a school project, where several students collaborate to achieve a goal. A group of friends might meet at recess. Scientists talk about groups of animals, like a pride of lions or a flock of birds.
What makes something a group is that its members share something: a purpose, a location, a characteristic, or a goal. The students in your classroom form a group because you're all learning together. The books on your shelf about space exploration form a group because they share a topic.
Groups can be temporary or permanent. A group of people waiting for a bus might scatter in five minutes, never to see each other again. But a music group, like a band, stays together, practicing and performing as a team.
The word also works as a verb: teachers often group students by skill level, putting similar learners together. A librarian might group books by genre. When you group things, you're organizing them into categories that make sense, helping you see patterns and work more efficiently.
