guardhouse
A small building where guards stay to watch and protect.
A guardhouse is a small building where guards stay while protecting a specific location. You might find a guardhouse at the entrance to a military base, where soldiers check identification and decide who can enter. Historic castles often had guardhouses near their gates, where armed guards watched for approaching visitors or potential threats.
The guardhouse serves as both a shelter and a command post. Guards can warm up during cold weather, keep their equipment dry, and maintain clear views of the area they're protecting. In some guardhouses, there's room for holding people temporarily, like soldiers who broke minor rules on a military base.
Think of a guardhouse as the guards' headquarters for a particular spot. While a security guard at a museum might patrol the galleries, the guards protecting Fort Knox (where America stores much of its gold reserves) work from guardhouses positioned around the facility's perimeter. The building gives them a permanent, protected position for watching over whatever they're assigned to protect, whether it's valuable treasure, important documents, or simply the peaceful grounds of a gated community.
