hall
A long indoor passage or large room for gatherings.
A hall is a long, narrow indoor space that connects rooms in a building. Schools have hallways where students walk between classes, lined with lockers and classroom doors. Houses have halls connecting bedrooms to the living room and kitchen. Museums have exhibition halls filled with paintings or artifacts.
The word also means a large room used for gatherings. A concert hall hosts orchestras and musical performances. A dining hall is where students eat meals together at boarding schools or colleges. A banquet hall is a grand room where people hold weddings, ceremonies, or formal dinners. A town hall meeting brings citizens together to discuss community issues.
Some buildings are called halls because they serve as gathering places: Carnegie Hall in New York City is one of the world's most famous concert venues, while a village hall might be the main meeting space for a small community.
