harmlessly
In a way that causes no harm or damage to anything.
Harmlessly means in a way that causes no damage, injury, or hurt to anyone or anything. When fireworks burst harmlessly in the sky, they create beautiful displays without setting anything on fire. When a bee lands harmlessly on a flower, it gathers nectar without stinging anyone nearby.
The word suggests that something could have caused problems but didn't. A baseball might sail harmlessly over the fence instead of breaking a window. A joke might seem risky but land harmlessly because everyone understands you're just being playful. A virus might pass harmlessly through someone with a strong immune system.
Sometimes people do things they think are harmless (without harm) that turn out not to be. What seems like harmless teasing to one person might actually hurt someone's feelings. That's why thoughtful people check whether their actions are truly harmless, not just assumed to be. When something genuinely happens harmlessly, though, everyone can relax: no damage was done, no feelings were hurt, and everything turned out fine.
