headwaiter
The main server who manages other waiters in a restaurant.
A headwaiter is the person in charge of all the waiters and waitresses in a restaurant's dining room. Think of the headwaiter as the captain of the service team: while other servers take orders and bring food to tables, the headwaiter oversees everything, assigns servers to different sections, handles special requests, and solves problems when they arise.
In fancy restaurants, the headwaiter (sometimes called the maître d', from a French phrase meaning “master of the house”) often greets guests at the door, shows them to their tables, and makes sure their entire dining experience goes smoothly. If a customer has a complaint or a special celebration, the headwaiter is usually the one who steps in to help.
The headwaiter needs to know the menu inside and out, manage multiple staff members at once, and stay calm when the restaurant gets busy. It's a job that requires leadership, an excellent memory, and the ability to make quick decisions. A skilled headwaiter can make a hectic night in a crowded restaurant feel effortless to diners, even though dozens of details are being coordinated behind the scenes.
