headwear
Things people wear on their heads, like hats and helmets.
Headwear is the general term for anything worn on the head. Baseball caps, winter hats, helmets, crowns, turbans, and bonnets are all types of headwear.
People wear headwear for many different reasons. A construction worker's hard hat protects against falling objects. A winter beanie keeps your head warm when it's cold outside. A chef's toque (that tall white hat) keeps hair out of food. A royal crown shows authority and status. A baseball cap shields your eyes from the sun during a game.
Throughout history, headwear has often signaled something important about the wearer: their profession (like a nurse's cap or a soldier's helmet), their religion (like a Jewish yarmulke or a Muslim hijab), their social status (like a king's crown), or simply their personal style. In some places and times, certain types of headwear were required by law or custom.
Today, most headwear is optional in everyday life, though some situations still call for it. You might wear a bicycle helmet for safety, a graduation cap for a ceremony, or a sun hat for a day at the beach. The word headwear is useful when you want to talk about all these different items as a category, rather than listing them one by one.
