health
The state of your body and mind being well and strong.
Health is the condition of your body and mind working well together. When you have good health, your body feels strong and energetic, your mind stays clear and focused, and you can do the things you want to do, whether that's playing soccer, solving math problems, or exploring a new hiking trail.
Health means your whole system functions well over time. Someone in good health sleeps well, eats nutritious food, exercises regularly, and manages stress effectively. A healthy person might still catch a cold sometimes, but their body bounces back quickly because their overall health is strong.
The word appears in many common phrases. When people say “to your health!” while raising a glass, they're wishing you wellness. Health insurance helps pay for medical care. A health food is supposed to be especially nutritious. Something healthy promotes good health, like a healthy breakfast or a healthy friendship that makes you feel supported and valued.
Doctors and scientists think about health in different dimensions: physical health (how your body works), mental health (how your emotions and thoughts function), and social health (the quality of your relationships). All three matter. You might be physically strong but struggling with anxiety, or you might have great friends but not sleep enough.
