heated
Very hot, or full of strong and excited feelings.
Heated describes something that has become hot, or a situation that has become intense and emotional.
When you heat something up, it becomes heated. A heated pool is warm enough for comfortable swimming. A heated debate in class, though, has nothing to do with temperature: it means people are arguing with strong feelings, their voices rising as they passionately defend their positions.
The emotional meaning captures that feeling of rising temperature: just as a pan gets hotter on the stove, a conversation can become more intense and charged. When two friends have a heated argument about who gets to be team captain, they're disagreeing with real emotion and energy, raising their voices and gesturing emphatically. A heated discussion at a town meeting means people care deeply about the issue and aren't holding back their opinions.
Notice that heated doesn't always mean angry. A heated competition can be exciting and spirited without anyone being mad. The basketball championship might be a heated battle where both teams play with fierce determination and the crowd roars with every basket.
The word suggests energy and intensity: things are warming up, emotions are running high, and everyone involved is fully engaged.
