herbivore
An animal that eats only plants for its food.
An herbivore is an animal that eats only plants. While you might choose a salad for lunch and a burger for dinner, a deer or rabbit sticks to leaves, grass, and other vegetation for every meal. Their bodies are specially designed for this plant-based diet.
Herbivores come in all sizes. Tiny caterpillars munch on leaves, while enormous elephants consume hundreds of pounds of plants daily. Some herbivores, like pandas, eat mainly one type of plant (bamboo), while others, like deer, browse on many different plants depending on the season.
Many herbivores have flat teeth perfect for grinding plants, unlike the sharp teeth that meat-eaters need. They often have special digestive systems too: cows, for instance, have multiple stomach chambers to break down tough plant material.
In nature, herbivores play a crucial role. They turn plants into energy that carnivores (meat-eaters) can use by eating herbivores. Grass growing in a meadow, a rabbit eating the grass, and a fox eating the rabbit shows this connected food chain. Without herbivores, the energy stored in plants couldn't flow to the rest of the animal kingdom.
