Heredity works through genes, which are like instruction manuals stored in nearly every cell of your body. You inherit half your genes from each parent, which is why you might look like a blend of both. Sometimes traits skip a generation: you might have red hair like your grandfather even though neither of your parents do, because the gene was passed down but hidden until it appeared in you.
Scientists study heredity to understand how traits move through families and populations. Gregor Mendel, an Austrian monk, discovered the basic rules of heredity in the 1860s by carefully breeding pea plants and tracking which traits appeared in each generation. His work laid the foundation for modern genetics.
Heredity shapes not just humans but all living things. Dog breeders use heredity to create puppies with specific traits, farmers grow crops with desired characteristics, and conservationists track heredity in endangered species to keep populations healthy.
