hesitation
A short pause before acting because you feel unsure.
Hesitation is that pause before you act, when you're not quite sure what to do. It's the moment when your hand hovers over the doorknob before entering a room full of strangers, or when you stand at the edge of the diving board, gathering courage before you jump.
Hesitation happens when uncertainty holds you back. You might hesitate before raising your hand in class because you're not completely confident in your answer. A chess player hesitates before moving a piece, sensing that something about the move doesn't feel quite right. Sometimes hesitation protects us: that split-second pause before stepping into the street might save you from an oncoming bicycle you hadn't noticed.
But hesitation can also cost opportunities. When you hesitate too long deciding which book to check out from the library, someone else might grab the one you wanted. Performers talk about the danger of hesitation: a violinist who hesitates mid-song breaks the music's flow, and a basketball player who hesitates on an open shot often misses.
Sometimes that pause gives you time to think clearly. Other times, hesitation just means you're letting fear make your decisions.
