hilltop
The highest point or very top of a hill.
A hilltop is the highest point or summit of a hill. When you climb to the top of a hill and can't go any higher, you're standing on the hilltop. From there, you can usually see for miles in every direction, looking down on the landscape below.
Throughout history, people have built important structures on hilltops: castles, fortresses, temples, and lookout towers. A castle built on a hilltop was much harder for enemies to attack because soldiers had to climb upward while defenders could see them coming from far away. The ancient Greeks built temples on hilltops, like the famous Parthenon in Athens. Many towns and cities grew around hilltops because the high ground offered protection and sometimes easier access to water from nearby springs or streams.
You might describe a house as sitting on a hilltop or a path that leads to the hilltop. When you reach a hilltop after a long hike, that moment of looking out over everything below can feel like it makes the climb worthwhile.
