histrionic
Overly dramatic and emotional, like acting in a play.
Histrionic means overly dramatic or theatrical, like someone putting on an exaggerated performance when a simple response would do. When a person acts histrionic, they're making a bigger emotional display than the situation calls for.
Imagine a student who loses a pencil and throws their hands in the air, wailing, “This is the worst day of my entire life!” That's histrionic behavior: the reaction is so overblown it seems almost like acting. Or picture someone who learns they got an A- instead of an A and collapses into their chair as if they'd received terrible news, sighing dramatically.
While theatrical drama works great on stage, it can be exhausting in everyday life.
When someone consistently acts histrionic, their constant drama can wear others out. Friends might start wondering whether any reaction is genuine. The kid who shrieks about every small setback might find that when something truly upsetting happens, people have trouble taking them seriously. Someone described as having a histrionic personality turns nearly every moment into an emotional performance, demanding constant attention and sympathy even when situations are minor or routine.
